French Regence Tulipwood and Kingwood Parquetry Commode

About the Item

Primarily of tulipwood and kingwood with heavy gilded drawer mounts . Sturdy . Presents very well . The drawers reflecting the fabled tulip by the gilt rosettes. The veneers laid in flattering patterns crossbanded and with tulips. The sides with geometric diamonds and wide outer banding . Intricate parquetry commode with the corner stiles retaining their flutes .,The Highly figured veneers complimenting the gilt bronze pulls . Finished with a well maintained French Polish . Very minor veneer loss, some minor repairs and with infill. overall very attractive .Sturdy. Minor chipping to feet at floor level . No key . Marble top is hand hewn and appears original , possibly re-polished or buffed., in shades of grey , cream , coral. Regence transition period between Louis Xiv to Louis Xv. Regence is best understood not as a style, but as a state of mind. It marked a turn toward intimacy, comfort, distraction and pleasure. Regence is a transitional style that resulted in greater comfort, and forms more elegant and agreeable to the eye. Lines had a new fluidity whilst retaining their symmetry.

    Repaired: areas of old infill replacing lost veneers , primarily to the edges of the sides . The original French Polish (shellac based) in good condition suggesting (but not definitive ) polishing had been done on top of existing finish thru the years. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Minor structural damages. Minor fading. Losses to the back boards as shown . Fading through outproducing a wonderful warm cognac color . The gilded mounts showing some wear , tarnish and light losses . Small scattered areas of veneer losses and veneer lifting . Over all appealing.
