Italian Parquetry Inlaid Walnut Commode / Chest of Drawers, 18th Century
About the Item
Chest of Drawers / commode hand-made in Italy in the late 1700s using poplar and walnut. The commode features three inset drawers with beautiful, hand-carved dovetail joints. The handles are still original. The case, top and baseboard all have cantered corners and the feet (still original) are cantered as well. The entire commode is covered with walnut veneer arranged mostly in a cube parquetry pattern. Vertically on the edges we can find some inlay of fruits and flowers as well. Throughout the piece we can also see the wooden pegs used to mortise it together and keep the structure stable and sturdy. Despite its delicate look, this is a very well-built piece of furniture that can be used daily to store clothes or linens. The inlay decorations were masterfully made and do show, in some spots, the signs of time (pictured).
This is a highly decorative and functional piece and will be a stylish addition to any room.
