About the Item

This antique small chest of drawers was crafted in the Keio Era (1867). Made from Japanese cedar and finished with traditional Japanese lacquer (urushi), the surface has developed areas of natural wear and fading over time, revealing a rich, aged character. The black lacquer finish adds depth and dignity, while the compact form makes it ideal for organizing small items such as stationery, jewelry, or other personal belongings. On the bottom of one drawer is an inscription written in sumi ink: “Keio 3rd year, Hinoto-U year, Kannazuki (October)”, corresponding to 1867. Kannazuki, literally translated as “the month without gods,” refers to a traditional Japanese belief: that in this month, deities from across the country leave their shrines to gather in Izumo, where they hold a divine meeting to discuss human relationships and destinies. This poetic reference to the calendar reflects the spiritual beliefs and rhythms of life in that era, quietly infusing this small chest with a sense of story and presence. The piece has been gently cleaned with water. As an antique, minor scratches and marks may be present—each adding to the story it tells over time. It has been carefully inspected and remains in excellent antique condition, with natural signs of age that enhance its character. Weight :6.39lbs(2.9kg) Shipping Information We ship from Japan.
