About the Item

A Japanese Meiji period single section tansu clothing chest from the late 19th century in Isho-dansu style, with zebra wood, five drawers and carrying handles. Created in Japan during the Meiji period in the later years of the 19th century, this wooden Isho-dansu clothing chest features a linear silhouette perfectly complimented by a dark zebra wood grain. The organized façade showcases five drawers (three large ones followed by two smaller ones at the bottom), each fitted with iron hardware made of C-scroll handles and a central lock. Tansus were portable chests, meant to store objects of daily use such as clothes. First appearing during the Edo period, the tansus were designed to be transported using wheels, handles or horizontal upper rails. Our particular tansu showcases side handles in the upper section, indeed allowing the piece to be moved more easily. The back is simply planked. We review all of our pieces and address issues we may find before they leave for your home; however, this is an antique piece, and as such it will keep its character and some imperfections, which is the quintessence of antique and vintage furniture. With its clean lines and dark patina, this Japanese Meiji period Isho-dansu clothing chest from the late 19th century will make for a lovely addition to any home, particularly placed in a bedroom or living room.
