About the Item

Provincial classicist Louis XVI chest of drawers. Aachen/Liège, late 18th century. Solid oak, florally and ornamentally carved. Traditionally crafted in the gallery construction method with four drawers, coffered sides, a slightly protruding moulded top panel and fluted pilaster strips ending in tapered feet. All-round moulded drawer fronts with floral and ornamental carving. Elegant brass key plates and ring handles. Dimensions Height: 101 cm / 39.76 inch. Width: 126.5 cm / 49.8 inch. Depth: 55 cm / 21.65 inch. Internal drawer dimensions Height: 14.5 cm / 5.7 inch. Width: 106 cm / 41.73 inch. Depth: 46 cm / 18.11 inch. This chest of drawers was traditionally made over 200 years ago using only wooden joints with dowels and hand-forged nails. Today, the furniture is in an authentic, largely original condition with signs of age-related wear, including several areas of damage to the corners of the drawer fronts and the hollow moulding on both sides at the back under the top panel (see photos). The locks are functional, but were probably replaced in the early 20th century. Stable furniture body. The runners of the drawers and part of the back panel have been renewed to ensure that the chest of drawers is in good working order and ready for everyday use. Furthermore, the old wax was removed from the surface and carefully sanded completely, revealing the beautiful matt texture of the raw oak wood.
