About the Item

A South German Louis XVI chest of drawers from the late 18th century. Walnut veneered on softwood with inlays and geometric marquetry made from various precious and fruit woods. Three-drawer chest of drawers in walnut veneer with central risalit and slightly protruding profiled top panel, standing on conical square feet. Frames made of ribbon inlays in maple and plum divide the drawer fronts into 3 sections each. The sides of the body feature large mosaic-like marquetry patterns consisting of numerous square rhombus fields (including burl wood), which create a varied colour and grain pattern due to their different veneer cuts (radial, tangential, grain). Two areas with parquet marquetry framed by wide band inlays with corner blocks, similar to those on the drawer fronts, divide the top of the table. The square walnut fields, inlaid in contrasting grain directions, create a woven appearance. Original brass key plates and ring handles complete the furniture. Dimensions Height: 89 cm / 35.03 inch. Width: 129.5 cm / 50.98 inch. Depth: 66.5 cm / 26.18 inch. Internal dimensions of the drawers: 19.5 cm (7.67 in.) high, 116 cm (45.66 in.) wide, 57 cm (22.44 in.) deep. A very classy piece of furniture and an authentic example of South German/Austrian furniture art from the second half of the 18th century. Slightly restored ready for use with a beautiful patina surface, age-related signs of wear and traces of old woodworm tunnels (not active!). Remnants of old wallpaper inside the drawers. The drawer bottoms have been authentically renewed with old wood. Locks are not original. No keys. Additional photos available! Please just send a message.
