Late 19th Century Venetian Polychromed Chest/Commode with Marbleized Cartouche Top
Measurements: Overall: 31.5" W × 15.5" D × 32" H
Fitted with three center drawers, each approx. 17" W × 5" H
A charming late 19th-century Venetian polychromed chest of drawers, richly decorated in the Rococo revival taste. The serpentine-fronted commode is topped with a faux-marble painted surface in warm terracotta tones, bordered with a gilt cartouche outline. The bombe-form case is painted in soft sage green with reserves of ochre and gilt scrollwork enclosing floral bouquets of roses, tulips, and garden blooms rendered in delicate polychromy.
The three graduated drawers are fitted with cast brass rococo handles, their sinuous foliate forms complementing the painted ornament. The chest is raised on cabriole legs with gilt accents and painted floral sprays at the knees, terminating in scrolled feet.
Techniques
Polychrome decoration: multi-layered hand-painted surfaces typical of Venetian painted furniture, combining green, ochre, rose, and gilt highlights.
Marbleizing: the top is executed in a faux-marble finish, imitating veined stone with mottled brushwork.
Cartouche panels: scrolling frames painted in gold and ochre enclose floral still lifes, referencing Venetian Baroque and Rococo furniture.
Florals: Naturalistic sprays include roses, tulips, carnations, and chrysanthemums in tones of yellow, red, and green, symbolizing abundance and seasonal change.
This commode is a fine example of the Venetian decorative tradition, where furniture was transformed into painterly objects through the art of polychrome and faux finishes. The restrained size makes it suitable for modern interiors, while the whimsical painting lends character and charm, equally at home in a romantic bedroom, entryway, or eclectic living space.
