Pair Esavian Bank Chest School Drawers Sideboard 1950s Midcentury James Leonard

About the Item

A near pair of drawer units designed by James Leonard for Esavian ESA (Educational Supply Association), a leading UK supplier of school furniture. These are the rarely seen 5 x 4 multi-drawer arrangement, as apposed to the most common 4 x 5. In now lovely condition and sympathetically conserved, the paddle legs and drawer fronts have been freshly painted in a greenish/yellow - colour matched to their original hue (found underneath various layers of other coloured paint). The carcass’ are constructed from solid beech and fitted with a beech ply top and sides. The ply tops have been remarkably well conserved being protected by layers of ‘Fablon,’ which has been removed. The sides do show evidence of their previous life, as do the drawers, which although relatively clean do have a few ink spills/graffiti inside, adding to the charm in my humble opinion. Neither of the two drawer units are fitted with back panels and no evidence of them ever having any, the only explanation we could think of is that they could have been used as classroom dividers as the drawers will fit from either side. They are listed as a near pair, the differences being one set of the 20 drawers are made entirely of pine, the other set of 20 entirely beech. The beech drawers are half an inch shorter in length than the pine drawers resulting in a half-inch rebate to the front of one of the units – see images. Each chest of drawers measures: 152cm wide x 61cm high x 34cm deep.
