About the Item
A very fine pair of French 19th/20th century Louis XV/XVI style Transitional Style Satinwood Parquetry and Gilt-Bronze Mounted Commodes with Brêche d'Alep marble-tops, in the manner of François Linke (1855-1946), inspired by models by Léonard Boudin (French, 1735-1804), Gilles Joubert (French, 1689–1775) and Jean-Henri Riesener (German, 1734-1806). The rectangular shaped bodies and mild serpentine fronts, each with a large drawer surmounted with ormolu wreath-ring pulls, the banded ormolu aprons with interlocking rings centered with acorn finials and keyhole escutcheons, the corners surmounted with ormolu acanthus shield mounts centered with swagged wreaths, raised on four cabriolet legs ending with with lion-paw-cast sabots. (Unsigned-Unmarked), circa: 1890-1900.
François Linke (1855-1946) was undoubtedly the most important Parisian ébéniste of his time. Having served an apprenticeship in his hometown of Pankraz, Bohemia, Linke arrived in Paris in 1875 and set up independent workshops at 170, rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine in 1881 and later also at 26, Place Vendôme. By the time of the Paris 1900 Exposition Universelle, Linke's worldwide reputation as a master of high individualism and inventiveness was already established and unmatched by his contemporaries. His success at the 1900 Exhibition afforded Linke a high degree of financial stability and allowed him to pursue new markets by exhibiting at subsequent international fairs. Like the inventories of contemporaries such as Beurdeley and Dasson, Linke's oeuvre included copies and adaptations of the distinct styles of 18th century important and royal French furniture. His most extravagant exhibition pieces, however, combined the Louis XV style with the new Art Nouveau style. Linke's frequent collaborator for his designs was the celebrated sculptor Léon Messagé. In 1904, he was made Officier de L'Instruction Publique, and in 1905 he was called to be a member of the Jury of the Liège exhibition. Following his stands in the St. Louis (U.S.A.) exhibition in 1904 and the Liège exhibition in 1905, Linke was decorated with the highest distinction of France, the Croix de la Légion d'Honneur, on October 11, 1906.

Pair of Louis XVI Style Commodes Attributed to Krieger, France, Circa 1880
By Antoine Krieger
Located in PARIS, FR
Pair of Louis XVI style commodes attributed to Krieger, in veneered wood and gilded bronze ; opening with three drawers, including one on the belt forming a writing desk and concealing two small side drawers. The commodes are decorated with an interlacing marquetry set with a double net on a green tinted wood background decorated in its center with florets. Rich ornamentation of chiseled and gilded bronzes decorated with acanthus friezes on the belt and garlands of flowers and frieze of posts at the corners, molded frames of water leaves on the side panels.
They rest on four fluted feet surmounted by Corinthian capitals, and with a Griotte marble top.
These commodes are inspired by those created by Jean-François Leleu delivered by order n° 32 of May 1st, 1773, with a third commode kept in London (Wallace Collection) for the bedroom of the Princesse de Condé at the Palais Bourbon in Paris. The central diamond, originally inlaid with a lily flower pattern, was changed during the Revolution. The pair is now exposed in the Petit Trianon in Versailles (see photo n°1 attached).
Jean-François Leleu (1729-1807), Parisian cabinet-maker, began his career as an apprentice in Jean-François Oeben’s workshop. Installed on the chaussée de la Contrescarpe, he became Maître ébéniste in 1764 and moved to rue Royale-Saint-Antoine. He worked for an aristocratic private clientele, including the prince de Condé for whom he delivered furniture between 1772 and 1777, or the comtesse du Barry...
