About the Item

The exact purpose of this pair of low, teak chests of drawers is difficult to determine. They are Colonial and heavily brass bound for strength. The brass straps are good quality and thick. They extend round the plinth base with iron straps continuing round the underside. These cabinets were made to last. One has 2 drawers and the other a single, deep drawer which is also marked as a faux drawer. Good skeletal brass handles have been used but they have extra decoration to them that we have not seen before. Likewise, the simple escutcheons have subtle flicks to the bottom, which we have seen on Chinese Export furniture before. Both chests have brass fittings to the sides to support something. On one side of each chest, there are double brackets to each end to receive a square section and to the other side each has a single bracket which is set lower than the doubles. We can only guess what these would have held. It may be that the two chests formed a bed with a central section fitted and the extra brackets were to take a frame for nets. Although the chests have a plinth base, each corner has a right angled iron strap with a screw fitting to probably take a leg. These could have been low just to raise the bed off the ground or it’s possible they took a longer leg to raise the chests up to a desk height with a board fixing in between the two. A plinth base with a longer leg would be unexpected but perhaps this was a dual piece of furniture. Although it is obvious that there are parts missing, these two low chests are still very useful. They would make good Bedside or Coffee Tables or a board could be made to link the two sections. Early to mid 19th Century.
