Victorian oak secretaire campaign chest

About the Item

Victorian oak secretaire campaign chest This Victorian oak secretaire campaign chest was made circa 1870. Once an officer was commissioned and ready to embark on a tour overseas, he would purchase a campaign chest to take with him, the Army & Navy stores in London was quite often the place for an officer to go to get such a great piece of furniture. The Victorian oak secretaire campaign chest is made in 2 halves, this was to make transportation easier as it was taken around the British Empire by ship, cart, and wagon. It has the flush brass handles and the brass corners inset to give this protection from the bangs and knocks it was bound to receive. The upper section has the secretaire drawer to the centre and further box drawers to each side, below these is the usual deep drawer. The bottom section has 2 graduated drawers, and the chest stands on the original turned feet. The secretaire drawer drops down after pressing the securing buttons on each side, this reveals the interior. To the front on the pollard oak drawers is an oak stay to prevent these interior drawers from sliding out during its handling and moving around. You lift this out and then you can access the lovely quality drawers inside. It would be easy to mistake his to be made of walnut as it is a lovely mid honey colour and a similar grain. Imagine the joy of ownership this will bring, and we all wonder what campaigns it would have been at. Dimensions 99cm wide 39ins 48cms deep 19ins 107cm high 42ins
