His name was also spelled MAUTTER, MOTAIRE, MAUTARD, MOTET or MAULBERT.  Received as a master on September 10, 1777, he became a cabinetmaker, official supplier to the Count of Artois, brother of the king and future Charles X. He supplied him with numerous pieces of furniture, both luxury and service, for his numerous residences. His works were delivered to the Palais du Temple, the castles of Bagatelle, Saint Germain en Laye and Maisons. His business soon prospered and several high court officials and rich amateurs joined his clientele. In 1791, Louis XVI ordered several chests of drawers as well as a wardrobe for the castle of Saint Cloud. He produced a lot of Louis XVI style furniture, almost all in mahogany, recognized for the finish of their execution and the ingenuity of their construction. One finds in particular chests of drawers, secretaries, small desks, bonheurs-du-jour, all kinds of living room tables, pedestal tables and game tables.
