English George III Inlaid Mahogany Serpentine Secretary Chest of Drawers

A very fine example of the George III period, this chest presents with a boldness of form that is unusually moving. The undulating top has an exaggerated projection around all three sides, the front edge perfectly conforming to the serpentine profile of the body while the scalloped sides and canted front corners contrast the squared form of the chest’s sides and corners. The drawers are cut from thick laminated oak and finished in mahogany veneers with satinwood stringers edging the flamed mahogany outer-border; each is beautifully hand dovetailed with precise little pins. Original brasses and locks are retained in each drawer (no key) and the top drawer is fitted to be used as a letter and bills organization system, complete with two pen wells and document storage. It was likely intended for an office, perhaps beside a desk where the actual work of writing would take place; or perhaps was used in the bedroom while being a convenient place to complete personal correspondence. The feet are particularly attractive, each being a sharp and beautifully formed “French” splayed foot with an exaggerated flare in the toe. Pure and remaining in exquisite original condition, this is a very fine acquisition for the classical home where a rich and vibrant surface coupled with a bold form are necessary to bring the room to life. Measurements: 44 1/2” W x 22 1/2” D x 31 3/8” H Condition report: A fine pure chest retaining original brasses and feet; surface restorations to veneers and banding throughout; repair to lower portion of proper right back foot. Scuffs and scratches from gentle use, the top with a few scratches to the shellac. Additional images are available upon request.
