About the Item

Dimensions: H x W x D: 86 x 123 x 70 cm. Antique chest of drawers in walnut veneer with banded plum inlays. Three large lockable drawers with brass handles and fittings. The chest of drawers was made in the Mainz region. Typical for the time and region is among other things the carved, dark colored base area. The chest of drawers is in a very good and absolutely everyday old restored condition. There are no veneer flaws and/or detached veneers. The locks work and the keys are present. The drawers run well and smoothly. There are no "old" odors or old or active worm infestations. The plum wood is slightly faded on the front. A Mainz dresser base very similar in design can be found on page 133 in the reference book: Christian Schatt - Barock- und Rokoko-Möbel - Mobiliar aus Bürgerhäusern und Herrensitzen des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts. Some information about walnut: Walnut was and is probably the most popular European precious wood for antique furniture of all epochs. In contrast to cherry or oak wood, which were out of fashion from time to time, walnut wood was always popular and we find it especially on antiques from the baroque, Louis XVI, Biedermeier and Art Nouveau periods. The beautiful grain lends itself to mirrored veneer images. South German and Austrian Biedermeier furniture is often veneered with walnut on softwood.In baroque and Louis XVI furniture we find walnut in combination with lighter woods such as maple or ash. Due to the fine pores of the wood, it is perfectly suited for shellac polishes.But wax or oil sealings are also possible. The structure of walnut wood ranges from simple straight lines to wild and lively. Also the color is absolutely interesting and can go from light reddish to dark brown even within one trunk. In Central and Southern Europe walnut was used both as solid wood and as veneer. Due to its good workability and beautiful wood structure, walnut is still one of the most popular woods in furniture and interior design. The walnut wood used in the time of origin of our furniture came from the respective region of origin of the furniture.
