About the Item

A rare pair of commodes in the French transitional manner by Town and Emanuel of London. Woods used are quarter veneered kingwood, with bois de Violette crossbanding; of breakfront form, with gently incurved ends, rising from restrained cabriole legs to a shaped apron: three doors in the carcase with shelved interiors and atop, a brecciated marble with a thumbnail moulded edge. Extensively mounted with very well cast and chased gilt bronze mounts, the apron having a female mask, the angles with female caryatids and floral sabots elsewhere, the hand-painted green and white Verte de Sevres Paris plaques depicting exotic birds, cherubs and swags have bronze cartouches. Bearing the makers label, Town and Emanuel to the reverse of one; stamped by the makers on both commodes, and a later retailers stamp, Edwards and Roberts. Town and Emanuel are recorded in the ‘Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840’ as being situated at 103 New Bond Street between 1830 and 1840, and apart from being manufacturers of furniture, also dealt in ‘curiosities and antiques’. The late renowned connoisseur Christopher Gilbert records in his ‘Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture ‘London 1997, a writing table in the transitional manner with similar plaques. The label on the commode reads ‘Town and Emanuel, manufacturers of Buhl Marquetrie, Resner (sic) & carved furnitures, tripods, screens & c of the finest and most superb designs of the Louis 14th. Splendid cabinets and tables inlaid with fine sevres and dresden China & c. old paintings and bronzes, carvings, oriental and other China, jewellery & curiosities bought and exchanged. Buhl and antique furniture repaired. By appointment to Her Majesty Edwards & Roberts was founded in 1845, and had premises at 21 Wardour Street London. By 1892 they occupied more than a dozen buildings in wardour street, where they continued to trade until the end of the century. They became one of the leading London cabinet makers and retailers working in a variety of styles, both modern and revivalist. Their business also involved retailing, adapting and restoring the finest antique furniture and there are many examples of their earlier furniture with later embellishments bearing their stamp.
