Rare Pair of 18th Century Hanging Corner Cupboards from Napoli, Italy

About the Item

This is an extremely unusual pair of hanging cabinets constructed of natural pine, which date to circa 1740. These would have been commissioned for an important villa, each hanging high in an opposing corner. The old locks would have secured valuable goods or documents, and the cabinets themselves would have provided a fantastic decoration for the room. The curved facades have tall doors, with a simple and restrained perimeter molding with canted shoulders, while the crown and apron are richly embellished with big scrolls, carved flowers, curved moldings, and large shells. The design is symmetrical for the most part, but the top shell motif hints toward the Rocaille movement of the mid-1700s. The doors (with original locks, no keys) open to reveal a clean interior with 4 shelves including the bottom board. The entire cabinet is to be hung by its original wrought iron loop in the back, but can also be installed by resting it on a bracket affixed to the wall. Note the upper and lower moldings as well as the curved molding just beneath the upper shelf: Each one is made from dozens of individually carved and joined pieces of wood! These corner pieces are a work of art and the natural coloration and patina of the old pine with light clear wax is warm and rich. They are truly unique, and a comparable pair of hanging corner pieces will not easily be found. Width measured at top is 25 3/4. Width measured at bottom is 22.
