Florentine Credenza with Corner Columns

About the Item

FLORENTINE CREDENZA WITH CORNER COLUMNS ORIGIN : TOSCANY, ITALY PERIOD : LATE 16th CENTURY Height: 84 cm Width: 101 cm Depth: 48 cm Walnut wood Although the first Italian credenza in the form of a sideboard were very simple, they soon adopted elegant and highly decorative forms thanks to the carvings. This small credenza, supported by two lion paws, opens with two leaves and a long drawer in the belt. It is typical of Tuscan furniture of the Cinquecento. Its façade is constructed as a reduction architecture, with a base, main body and entablature. The decoration of armorial cartouches, cut leather and friezes of coins underline the two jambs. On either side are two robust Ionic columns. The two doors that open on the front are surrounded by fine mouldings and have a turned knob in the centre on a wooden umbilicus. A remarkable frieze of palmettes underlines the base of this furniture in walnut with a tight grain and a remarkable patina.

It rests on two lion's paw feet at the front. The decoration includes a beautiful frieze of scales at the bottom, which continues on the sides. Above this, in the center, a scrollwork cartouche once bore coats of arms. On either side, there is an abundant vegetal decor with vine branches and sumptuous grape clusters.
