About the Item

Sideboard in Elm by Olavi Hänninen for Mikko Nupponen, Finland, 1958 This large credenza is crafted from solid elm and features a simplified design that highlights the natural beauty and grain of the wood. It includes three doors, shelves, and drawers. The high-leg base adds an appealing touch to the sturdy cabinet. Each door showcases the elm wood's organic and natural appearance, while the drawers are fitted with large metal handles that beautifully complement the dark-stained elm. The sideboard is in excellent original condition, exhibiting only minor wear consistent with its age and use. Olavi Tapio Hänninen was a Finnish designer and interior architect recognized for his modernist creations, which included furniture, trams, and church silverware. He notably collaborated with Antti Nurmesniemi and Olli Borg on the interiors of the Palace Hotel, where he designed a prominent plastic chair for the café. Prior to establishing his own design studio in 1961, Hänninen worked alongside architect Viljo Revell in the early 1950s, contributing to the Palace Hotel's interiors. He won a gold medal at the 11th Milan Triennale in 1957 and received the State of Finland Award for Industrial Design in 1977. Additionally, Hänninen was an honorary member of the Finnish Association of Interior Architects. A book on his life and work, titled "Muovituolista raitiovaunuun," was published in 2006.
