Louis Philippe Credenzas

LOUIS PHILIPPE STYLE

Known as the “Citizen King,” Louis Philippe reigned from 1830 to the Revolution of 1848 with the support of the upper bourgeoisie. Whereas the monarchs of 18th-century France, including Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis XVI, dictated aesthetics through the decadence of the aristocratic court, Louis Philippe had a more down-to-earth presence. He could be seen walking the streets like an ordinary person, carrying his own umbrella and shaking hands with subjects. Antique Louis Philippe–style furniture reflects a sense of simplicity and the sovereign’s passion for the country’s history, such as his establishment of a Museum of the History of France at Versailles, which had been mostly disused since the French Revolution.

Middle Ages, Gothic and Renaissance design informed a nationalist style that celebrated this heritage, with the hodgepodge of influences becoming prevalent in the homes of the bourgeoisie. Cabinetmakers Guillaume and Jean-Michel Grohé created reproductions of historic pieces for the king as well as royal houses abroad. Louis Philippe commissioned sculptor François Rude to create patriotic monuments that paid tribute to military heroes, while designs for furniture published by Claude-Aimé Chenavard, an ornamentalist who conceived widely loved objects for the Sèvres manufactory, further helped spread a revival of Renaissance style.

The rounded profiles of authentic Louis Philippe tables and chairs were preferred in the apartments rather than palaces being furnished by the affluent middle and upper classes. Ornamentation was minimal on the finely crafted pieces, such as large rectangular mirrors adorned with gold and silver leaf finishes and subdued carvings. The popular Louis Philippe commodes were solidly made with clean lines that showed off the grain of the wood and were often topped with marble surfaces.

History and curiosity of this credenza This piece of furniture with an exceptional ancient Patina, is the summoning evocator of romantic atmospheres of a bygone past. Decorate your kitchen with a piece of history and culture. Importance and origin of Piedmontese style furniture The Enlightenment brings with it important cultural innovations and among these also a reinterpretation of the furniture as known until then and brings the furniture to be more elegant, but also more functional. It is France with its royal court and with the emergence of a new bourgeoisie that becomes the first nation to implement these innovations, then influencing the main European courts. This is how the creation of new styles of chest of drawers, trumeau, console, corner furniture, mirrors and desks makes the furniture as a whole lighter and more elegant. In Italy there are production centers and workshops with expert craftsmen who fully interpret its style and elegance; one of the best Turin interpreters is Pietro Piffetti...

Antique Country French Provincial Farmhouse Louis Philippe Buffet
Located in Forney, TX
A period Louis Philippe (1830-1848) country French farmhouse walnut enfilade with double drawers over double doors. Circa 1830 Born in Provincial Southern France during the Bourbon Restoration of the first half of the 19th Century. The most beautifully grained walnut was selected when creating this distinctive piece, massive in scale, of excellent quality hand-crafted craftsmanship, full of charming antique character, including pegged solid wood construction, hand cut dovetail joinery, and hand carved, hewn, and chamfered detailing. Featuring a rectangular shaped framed plank boarded top with molded edge and canted "cut-off" corners that correspond to those found below on both the case and base. The worn smooth wood top with rich, warm patina sits above two locking dovetailed frieze drawers, each with simple string banding, wooden keyhole escutcheon, and iron key. Large lockable paneled cupboard doors open to reveal a huge, spacious interior fitted with a single fixed slab shelf, offering very generous amounts of convenient storage. Retaining the original four keys, each different and individually matched to one primitive forged iron lock...
