Beautiful Large 17th Century Yew, Oak and Fruitwood Press Cupboard / Wardrobe

About the Item

With a fantastic colour and in excellent original condition this large English oak, yew wood and fruitwood press cupboard was made by skilled hands in around 1680. The two substantial doors with double fielded panels open on solid brass H hinges to reveal a capacious interior with 12 original well shaped pegs and a (later added) hanging rail. The whole is very solid and robust, no movement or weakness. The upper case lifts off the bottom for transport. Some evidence of old woodworm -long since treated and dead - small marks, losses and knocks consistent with age and use. Original backboards – huge slabs of oak – and all of the timbers hand azed to inner surfaces. The lower case with three dummy drawers over two working drawers, each with later Georgian brass bail handles and substantial oak linings. The press is peg jointed throughout and has developed this wonderful ripe melon colour over the last three hundred and fifty years. The dummy drawers allow you to hang clothes at full length and the press is deep enough for modern coat hangers. A handsome piece of early British furniture in very condition for age and with a beautiful colour developed naturally over centuries of care, wax and hands. 17th Century English Oak Strong Box c. 1640
Located in Heathfield, GB
A rare English oak strong box retaining original and elaborately forged iron lock plate and lock with escutcheon cover and with the original working key. The case with original beautifully shaped corner brackets and original carrying handles – all the hardware fixed with the original rivets. The interior with seven oak drawers with attractive original handles, three over two banks of two, each drawer with very fine boarded linings in wainscot oak with nailed up bottoms. These chests were used by merchants who travelled and traded. The drawers may have contained precious gemstones such as diamonds, gold or jewellery, spices or coins. The fall descends to form a desk at which to write, weigh or count. This example no doubt travelled aboard ships of the day carrying cargo and travellers around the world – ships like the wooden hulled Mayflower which took the Pilgrim Fathers to America in 1620. The strong box has probably visited many lands and carried all manner of exotic and highly valuable items. If only it could talk! A beautiful and very rarely seen early English example set on a most attractive hand made oak stand...
