About the Item
This Japanese antique cupboard (mizuya tansu) was crafted in the Late Meiji Period (1890s–1912).
Finished in shibuzumi (persimmon tannin combined with pine soot), it cures to a quiet, matte black that mellows with age, giving the surface calm depth in the spirit of wabi-sabi.
Behind the glass sliding doors—set with gently wavy old glass—each glass bay includes one wooden shelf, providing practical tiers for tableware, tea ware, glassware, or small books and objects while keeping dust at bay. Below, a bank of drawers with old metal pulls offers tidy everyday storage.
Traditionally in Japan, cupboards of this type were stacked in sections for practical reasons: each unit could be carried through narrow machiya passages, seasonal cleaning and repairs were simpler, and the arrangement could be set side by side or stacked to suit the room. In use today, you can stack the three sections as a tall cupboard or arrange them side by side as a long low sideboard, depending on your space. On the back, each section retains brush-inscribed numbers — “i-no-ichiban / i-no-niban / i-no-sanban” — marks used to keep track of the units for moving and cleaning.
For safety, rear anti-shift / anti-tip brackets are included; please install them when placing the cabinet to secure the stacked sections and prevent movement.
Cleaned and disinfected with a non-toxic solution.
Doors and drawers move smoothly.
As an antique piece, minor scratches and marks are present, each adding to its unique charm and the story it tells over time. It has been carefully inspected and remains in excellent antique condition, with natural signs of age that enhance its character.
