Industrial Cupboards

INDUSTRIAL STYLE

Industrial floor lamps, bar stools, desks and other industrial-style furnishings have experienced a resurgence in popularity with the rise of interest in minimalist design.

It's a look that celebrates the past even as it suggests vigor, productivity and brawn. The newly chic industrial style of decor repurposes the simple, sturdy furniture of an earlier world of commerce — brushed-metal storage cabinets and display shelves, task lamps and pendant lights with enameled shades, work tables with worn wooden tops and cast-iron bases — and couples them with aesthetic touches emblematic of energy and optimism, from bright upholstery fabrics to flowers.

The rise in prominence of the industrial style has come hand-in-hand with the residential repurposing of former manufacturing and warehouse districts throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. In many loft apartments created in shuttered factories, the architectural envelope has been left intact.

Industrial-style interiors feature elements like raw brick walls, exposed steel beams and oak floors whose history is written in every pit and gouge. Iron and glass transom windows give definition and interest to small kitchen areas anchored by kitchen islands made of marble, steel and brass, while taxidermy or vintage neon signs serve as wall art in living rooms dotted with leather club chairs. Patina is the keynote to a decor in sync with such surroundings.

On 1stDibs you will find industrial furniture designs that wear their age beautifully — and were built to last.

St. Charles Mid-Century Modern Steel Kitchen Upper Cabinet, Wall-Mount, Gray
Located in Brooklyn, NY
St. Charles Mid-Century Modern steel kitchen upper cabinet, wall-mount, gray, original finish. two-door, extended cabinet. Measures: 30" W x 16" D x 48" H. This listing is for “A” in the second image. St. Charles was one of the earliest brands of steel cabinetry in the United States, dating back to 1935, when St. Charles bought Janes & Kirtland, maker of the “White House Line” steel. Steel kitchens were first developed in the second half of the 1920s and exclusive to extremely high-end (often exhibition) homes in the pre-WWII era. These early (pre-war) cabinets were quite streamlined and "deco" in their appearance. Typically white, ice gray or gentle cream color, they were customized to each home and considered the 'modern' and very "American" choice for the discerning client. Frank Lloyd Wright was an early fan of steel kitchen cabinets and adopted them quite early on in the century. Wright chose St. Charles cabinets...

Jim Rose Two-Door Housetop Weave Multi-Color Steel Quilt Pattern Cupboard
Located in Chicago, IL
This is a totally functional two-door cupboard. It is created from hot rolled steel and found steel. The legs are made from salvaged pipe. The panels on the door fronts and sides are made from salvaged pieces of steel with the original paint and texture making this modern Industrial aesthetic a model of sustainable design. The pattern is inspired by the Quilts of Gee's Bend Alabama. Prominent colors in this piece are tones of blue, black, gray and blue, gray and rust. There are two fixed shelves inside the cabinet. This piece is available as pictured. Jim Rose Two Door housetop quilt cupboard hot-rolled steel, found painted steel 42 H x 33 W x 17 D in 106.68 H x 83.82 W x 43.18 D cm JR0010 Jim Rose b. 1966 Bio: Born in Indiana, Jim Rose lived in Europe until he returned to the United States to attend college. After one year at Bard College, Jim transferred to the School of the Art Institute in Chicago (SAIC) where he graduated in 1988 with a BFA. His skillful interpretation of the Shaker design is a result of intense research and field study of Shaker furniture, architecture, culture and history. After over two decades of dedicated work, he has mastered the minimalism of the Shaker technique and created his own unique visual vernacular. The quilts of Gee's Bend have become a monumental influence taking this artist's work to new levels of unique interpretation and artistry. His selection of aged steel results in a patina directly related to that of aged wood while his colored strips beautifully mimic worn cloth. Each piece of furniture is masterfully made and intended for daily use. Jim Rose’s steel furniture is featured every year at SOFA Chicago for the past 25 years. Industrial Postman Shelf, France, 1950s
Located in Hamburg, DE
This shelf is an old postal delivery or sorting shelf from France from the 1950s. It has been painted over before, but that must have been some time ago, because in many places the paint has already flaked off again and so the shelf now has a charming patina. The 36 compartments are numbered, these must be individual districts of the postal service area in the days. If you recognize this piece of furniture, you have probably seen it in an old French movie or even in a small provincial post office in France, because here and there these gems are still in use. Originally there was a chair integrated in the front of the shelf, but unfortunately it is not included. Nevertheless, this pastel yellow shelf...
