18th Century Kentucky Butternut Ladies Desk

About the Item

For those with an eye and love for antiques and an interest in possible provenance, this extraordinary Kentucky-made women's writing desk should peak your interest. It is said that this writing desk was created for the first, first lady of Kentucky, Susannah Hart Shelby, wife of Isaac Shelby, Kentucky's first governor. There is no paperwork to prove this as fact, other than the word of the family that previously owned this desk. Regardless, this piece speaks loudly of it's place in time with it's unique design and construction. From hand-chiseled lock sets and dove tail joints constructing the drawers and the upper and lower cabinet body to the hand-turned posts supporting the upper portion of the desk, this piece was in existence during the 18th century! And, because there are no others exactly like this piece, it was most likely designed as a unique one-of-a-kind piece. The fact that this piece has been meticulously repaired over the centuries, it is likely that it held significant historic importance. The inlay repair is an art piece in and of itself in the how it takes on a patchwork effect in wood. The size of this desk makes it a perfect piece for any room or hall where such a piece would draw attention! Please spend some time with the images provided to appreciate the historic detail in this beautiful woman's desk. All repairs have been beautifully done and represent the period. Wear consistent with age and use. Felt is likely not original based on the color and condition. Hardware on desk lid has also been replaced at some point over the 200+ years. There is one spot on the side of the lower casework with a missing piece of veneer.

18th Century Walnut Kneehole Desk
Located in Bedfordshire, GB
A very attractive early 18th century, George I Period, walnut kneehole desk of diminutive proportions, having extremely well figured quarter veneered, crossbanded top with elegant re-entrant corners, over arrangement of seven drawers retaining original brasswear, flanking central cupboard door with original brass hinges, raised on original bracket feet. In general kneehole deeks are regarded as a smaller, more compact version of the more typically found pedestal desk, with some form of an arrangement of drawers around a central set recessed cupboard being the typically found form. There are of course various different designs to be found along the same theme, but as a general rule that is the form you will usually find in a georgian kneehole desk...
