19th Century English Walnut Desk

About the Item

This is a walnut desk made in England, circa 1840. The top has a nicely shaped green leather writing surface with gold tooling. There is a hand carved gadrooned edge around the entire top that is done in a gold gilt. There are 4 drawers across the top of the working side of the desk with a larger drawer on both the right and left hand lower part of the desk. There is a beautifully hand carved molding below the 4 upper drawers. The other side of the desk looks exactly the same as the working side of the desk, but, all drawers are false and do not function as working drawers. Each drawer front and the right and left sides of the desk have walnut bandings with string inlays of walnut and Kashmir walnut ( the finest cut of burr walnut ) to each middle. The solid brass handles are of the finest quality. The desk sits on 2 fabulous pedestals, each with hand carved gadrooned moldings over shell carvings sitting on 4 carved ball and claw feet with carved knees. The entirety of the base in done in gold gilt. Even the inside of the desk is finished in the same manner as the drawer fronts and the sides with walnut bandings, string inlays of walnut and Kashmir walnut to the middle. The inside also has a continuation of the shell carving all done in gold gilt. This is an unbelievably fine quality desk in fabulous physical condition and finish. This is a remarkable example of the best of the best. It measures 69 1/2 in. Wide x 31 1/2 in. Deep x 32 in. Tall.
