Antique English Regency Mahogany Butlers Secretary c. 1820
About the Item
This exquisite English Regency mahogany butler’s secretary, dating to circa 1820, captures the grandeur and functionality of early 19th-century design. The mahogany boasts a rich, deep patina, enhanced by the elegantly curved sides of the open shelving, perfect for displaying fine china or decorative objects. A brass gallery runs along the top, adding a refined decorative element in keeping with the Regency aesthetic.
The central writing surface is concealed within a hinged fold-down desk, which reveals a fitted interior with small compartments and drawers. Below, the two cabinet doors, adorned with meticulously outlined paneling, open to reveal ample storage space. The piece is supported by gracefully tapering side columns with applied giltwood foliate carvings and terminates in robust ball feet, lending it both stability and visual impact.
While the secretary is in overall excellent condition, there has been some minor veneer repair, which is common for a piece of this age and does not detract from its beauty or functionality. This elegant and practical piece would make a sophisticated addition to a study, dining room, or living space, offering a combination of timeless beauty and functionality that perfectly embodies the Regency period. 59h x 36w x 16d knee height 29

A contemporary take on the butler's desk. A butler's desk is a cabinet that converts into a desk, concealing its function. A desk, standing on its own looks out of place without an accompanying chair and lamp, but a cabinet that functions as a desk looks fine all by itself.
