English Mid-19th Century Burl Walnut Davenport Desk with Leathered Writing Slope

About the Item

English mid-19th century burl walnut davenport desk with Wellington locking bar for the five side drawers (one key locks all the drawers at the same time) on the right hand side. The left side has sham drawers. There is also a small drawer that stored an inkwell and pen rest, it pulls out and swings forward for ease of use. The writing slope is newly leathered in hand dyed and hand tooled full cowhide. When the writing surface is lifted there is a hold fast to keep it raised without putting strain on the hinges. The interior space has two small drawers and storage for paper and documents.. The back side has a molded edge panel that is also burl walnut. Flattened bun feet hide rolling casters which make this desk easy to move about. The brass gallery sets off the superb burl walnut timber in this exceptionally finely crafted davenport, circa 1860.
