French 19th Century Louis XVI Style Mahogany and Ormolu Inlaid Bureau Plat

About the Item

A very handsome and impressive French 19th century Louis XVI style mahogany and ormolu inlaid Bureau Plat. The desk is raised on tapered legs with square ormolu topie feet and ormolu acanthus leaf sabots. The frieze has a kingwood inlay with tulipwood border. At the front is a wide drawer opulently decorated with an ormolu laurel wreath and bow and garlands and hanging tassel, flanked by ormolu mounts of wreaths at each side. The back is likewise decorated with a faux drawer. At each side is a very grand central ebonized fruitwood cabochon accented with the royal Fleur de Lis within an ormolu wreath, with bow and garlands at the top of each leg is a similar ebonized fruitwood with ormolu fleur-de-lis and ormolu hanging chandelles. At the top is a remarkable mahogany with tulipwood center accented with fruitwood and ebonized fruitwood borders and rosettes at each corner and foliate at the sides. All within an ormolu gallery. With all original gilt and rich patina throughout. Typically the fleur-de-lis symbol represents custom made pieces that were created for the nobility of that period.
