Mid 18th Century French Louis XVI Period Tulipwood and Ormolu Bureau Plat
About the Item
An elegant and high quality French 18th century Louis XVI period tulipwood and ormolu bureau plat desk. The three drawer desk is raised by four fine square tapered legs with beautiful scrolled foliate and acanthus leaf designed fitted ormolu sabots and mottled foliate top caps. Above each leg are elegant rosettes flanking the three drawers. The outer drawers are decorated with finely detailed pierced ormolu keyhole escutcheons with charming winged cherubs holding wreaths set on tulipwood back grounds and framed in fine Coeur de Rai borders. The central drawer displays a stunning richly chased pierced ormolu keyhole escutcheon with two intricately detailed cornucopias with abundant fruit and luxuriant berried laurel branches tied together with a bow and in a superb satin and burnished finish. The sides are decorated with elegant butterfly veneered panels also framed in Coeur de Rai ormolu bands. Above is the original green fitted leather writing surface decorated with a fine foliate gold tooled band and framed in a tulipwood border. All original hardware.
