FRENCH LOUIS XV STYLE ORMOLU MOUNTED KINGWOOD BUREAU PLAT 20th Century, Crafted in Spain This is an unusually well crafted bureau plat, the weight of it being considerable in it's solid core construction. Stamped on the underside "Made in Spain", the piece captures the spirit and vibrancy of the Louis XV period with utmost accuracy. The bronze mounts are exceptionally well done for the period, each almost entirely free of casting flaw, these filed and chiseled into perfection before being fire gilded. The female masks on the corners have a hammered texture, these being almost monumental in stature and projection from the legs. The top is a well preserved tooled gilt black leather edged in cross banded veneers and framed in a very thick gilt bronze rim with shell corners. One side of the desk has three drawers, all dovetailed, the other side with three faux drawer fronts. The entire desk rests over bold cabriole legs that terminate in scrolled sabots. While many bureau plats are available, particularly from the second and third quarters of the 20th century, few meet the quality and precision standards of this exceptional piece. The mounts are very moving, the level of detail cast and chiseled into every casting setting the desk apart from it's peers in every way. The surface has been preserved quite handsomely, despite the typical use indicators on the top and writing surface. For anyone with a bold and vibrant library or office space, this is a piece that will set the pace for all other decor in that space. It is an investment grade selection built to last the test of time and will certainly be a cherished part of your collection for a lifetime. Measurements: 69 3/4" W x 38" D x 31 1/8" H; 23 5/8" H to underside of center drawer Condition Report: Scratches to veneered surfaces around the top. Light scratches and blemishes to the leather, though this surface remains in overall excellent condition. Veneer cracking/buckling inside of some legs, quite minor. Very minimal veneer losses and light checking to the surfaces. No key. An unusually heavy and well constructed piece.
