Handsome and large Mid-Century Modern cantilever executive desk and credenza by Myrtle Desk company. It is in good vintage condition. We have not refinished this desk. It retains its original finish and nicks and dings from its years of use. It could be refinished; however, we love its originality and look. Please see photos, circa mid-20th century. That’s not a desk. This is a desk! And….a credenza. This Myrtle office set is not only monumental it is magnificent. The set is comprised of a Mid-Century Modern walnut cantilever executive desk with beautiful brass accents which is only outdone by the second piece in the set, its matching cantilevered walnut credenza with brass hardware and accent. Even its signs of age and use are intriguing. If you are an executive looking for a desk; or you just want to feel like an executive…or queen…or president…or…? you need look no further. Myrtle Desk and Alma Desk are intriguingly intertwined. Myrtle Desk was founded in 1899 by H. W. Frazier after selling out his shares of Alma Furniture. He had previously been a founding partner in purchasing Baker Wood Products in High Point NC which was renamed Alma Furniture in 1896. Myrtle began selling residential furniture, specializing in roll top desks and china closets, as did Alma. In 1923 Myrtle was purchased by W. Thomas Powell and Charles E. Hayworth Sr, who owned Hayworth Roll and Panel the first plywood mill in NC and who had in 1921 purchased Alma Furniture which he had renamed Alma Desk and refocused the product line to office furniture, as did Myrtle. Even though the two companies, Myrtle and Alma, went to market as two separate companies, they had the same board of directors and president. In 1929 Charles E. Hayworth died and left the entire organization to his wife, who, ironically, was named Myrtle. Myrtle not only raised their six children but ran the combined companies till 1955 when their son, Charles Hayworth Jr. took the helm. The combined Alma/Myrtle were said to be the largest office furniture producer in the world during the 1950s. In the late 1990s Alma was sold, and out of operation by 1998. Myrtle Desk also sold in 1992 to Haworth Inc.; again, ironically, pronounced the same, spelled differently, and not related to the Hayworth family. Although as of today Haworth is still operating, the Myrtle name has slowing vanished. You won’t find many desks and credenzas like this iconic and extraordinary pair. Make this set yours. Handsome Mid-Century Modern smaller writing desk by the Robert John Co. of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania featuring walnut cabinet with white painted steel frame and white laminate top. This is from their Steelwood collection. It desk is in wonderful restored condition. We have sanded and put a new finish on the walnut and the metal frame. The laminate has been cleaned and polished. There are still signs of age but nothing major. Please see photos, circa 1960s. This wonderful Mid-Century Modern smaller size office desk has been a real puzzle. It has taken much research and I’m still not sure I know about the Robert John Co. from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Their tag says Makers of Contemporary Furniture and that this desk is. When I google them all I come up with is other pieces of furniture being offered that were made by them, but I can’t find any history on the company. And, several listings say the piece was designed by Robert John but made by Knoll. I have not found supporting evidence of that statement! No matter. This is a fabulous desk with a walnut box cabinet containing three equal size drawers that are adorned with cool black and white handles. It is surrounded by a white painted metal frame which accents the walnut wonderfully and a white laminate work surface. This was originally in an architect’s office. I can see why. It has awesome lines and is beautifully designed. This desk is just the right size for a home office. Not as big as an executive desk but a little bigger than a writing desk. Fabulous!
