About the Item

This very fine desk made during the Regency period in England is of great design and exceptional quality. Constructed of Mahogany solids and veneers with fine figure and color. The desk can be used in a number of ways through the operation of cranks that raise and lower the back section with pigeon holes and slides, one can raise the lower section so it can be used as an architect's table or lectern for books. Finished in the full round this desk would have worked in the middle of a large and impressive room. The desk has numerous drawers (6) and compartments (5) as well as those hidden in the adjustable back section. The Iron and mahogany crank works well and comes with a lockable mechanism hidden in the lower drawers so that once completely closed and the locks are engaged and the drawers are locked the desk becomes an almost safe-like device. The piece has a very nice old faded surface creating a rich play of light and dark in the patina. The piece has an interesting provenance and was recently cleaned and brought here from England as part of an estate dispersal.
