About the Item

Striking model B19 desk designed by Pierre Chapo and manufactured in his own atelier in Gordes, France 1960. This executive desk is one of the most versatile designs by Chapo. Although its beauty lies in the simplicity of the design, it has fantastic woodworking details which were very characteristic for the designs by Pierre Chapo. The desk is made of solid parts of elm wood which show a stunning structure. The desk is beautifully crafted with several wooden joints which are not only structurally necessary, they are also a part of the aesthetic. The desk can be used in different positions as the tops weight balances on the cabinet, you can change the direction and position to your wishes. The cabinet features many drawers for lots of storage options. This desk is in stunning original condition and has a beautiful honey colored tone. The chair is not included in the listing, this could be purchased separately. The work of Chapo combines ancient woodworking skill and tradition with a contemporary aproach. In designing his distinguished pieces, Solid oak, elm, teak and ash were mainly used. After graduating from the Parisian École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in architectural studies, he travelled through scandiavia, Central America and the United States. After returning tot he French capital he opened his own gallery in 1958 on boulevard de l’Hôpital 14, where among other artists mainly his and Isamu Noguchi’s creations were on display. In 1960, he recieved a gold medal from the city of Paris as a token of appreciation for his contributions to the city. The work by Pierre Chapo is parallel to the designs by Charlotte Perriand. Due to the increase of demand for those pieces, Pierre Chapo’s work is highly sought after as its similar in many ways. Pierre Chapo is for sure one of the best designers from French soil, clearly to be seen at his architectural designs and craftsmanship. We always have a selection of Chapo in stock.
