19th century dresser and secretaire

About the Item

A striking 19th-century pine dresser with an unusual central secretaire. The top pair of cupboards open to reveal two generous shelves, ideal for books or kitchenalia, with a decorative triangular cornice surround. The central bureau or secretaire folds down to reveal a level writing slope with two brass inset butterfly hinges and two extending support arms to either side. To the left are three small drawers with brass drawer pulls, an open central space and a small opening door to the right with a brass escutcheon to the front. The base has a further two large cupboards ideal for the storage of larger items due to the generous width and depth. The dresser, raised on a plinth base, is one single piece and does not split into two parts. However, the top two shelves are removable if required. Both pairs of cupboard doors can be removed for transportation as illustrated in the photographs. Beautifully weathered with superb colour and patination throughout. French, circa 1800.
