About the Item

Spectacular bar cabinet designed by Vittorio Dassi, a prestigious Italian designer active in the middle of the last century. Made of rosewood, it has an inlaid pearl white marble top. The upper half is divided into three registers, each with its own independent key; the central one opens up as a bar cabinet and is completely covered with mirrors, and also has a glass shelf. The sides are divided by a wooden shelf. The lower part is open, with the bottom in gilded and carved wood forming grooves, with a glass shelf and the base in inserted glass in a yellow tone. The interior is light colored fruit wood. About Vittorio Dassi (1893 - 1973) Vittorio Dassi was an Italian post-war and contemporary artist who was born in 1893. Dassi's furniture, made between the 1940s and 1950s, is distinguished by the choice of precious woods such as rosewood, cherry, ash, and walnut, often decorated with inlaid panels and crystals signed by great glass masters. Elegant in design, and without losing functional quality, his furniture can be combined with the refined style of Gio Ponti, to whom Vittorio was linked by important collaborations after taking over from his father at the Dassi Mobili company. Moderni in Lissone. Among the most important projects of the factory is, in fact, the realization of the furniture for the rooms of the Hotel Royal in Naples, designed by Ponti in the mid-50s, a period that marks the turning point of Dassi towards forms more schematics and teak wood for the production of modular furniture. In general, Italian modernist designers continued to be deeply attached to and influenced by their craft tradition. But his contribution to the definition of modernism was decisive also and above all because it was defined by a considerable dose of artistic liberalism. The aesthetic diversity within the village itself was great: pieces like this 1960s desk in steel and rosewood by Gianni Moscatelli for Formanova seem to marry Danish and Dutch elements; while the legendary Gio Ponti created designs in oak, mahogany and ant that exude an exquisitely Italian sensibility; and again, Vittorio Dassi's mid-century desks, with their contrasting materials and shapes, illustrate another new Italian modernist feature.
