About the Item

Distinguished and sophisticated Biedermeier Lyra secretary, Austro-Hungarian Empire, 1820s. Made of walnut. Multiple curved cut out base on feet with bead-and-reels. Elaborate black solder paintings in the form of arabesques with floral motifs. Semicircular basement with two drawers. Each with filigree framing by ribbon-shaped black lot painting. Profile strips, above the writing flap with a wide drawer above. Profiled, projecting cornice. Head with volutes, geometric ornament and ribbon inlays as well as central drawer. Extremely detailed and cleverly designed interior: three drawers with brick ornamentation, three flanking drawers above each. In the centre an aedicula with an embedded round temple with ebonised columns. The round temple can be pulled forward and is fully rotatable. On its back there are several small secret drawers. Beside the extremely richly ornamented triangular gable of the aedicula there are removable letter compartments. Outstanding collector's item of the highest quality. The Biedermeier Lyra secretary has been completely restored. The black solder paintings as well as parts of the pedestal, the top and the interior have been complemented in the course of the restoration. (Research and text: Art historian Jens J. A fine, elegant, antique Austrian mahogany Biedermeier secretary desk cabinet, circa 1820. The cabinet in two sections, the top with a curved architectural pediment, below is a curved door tabernacle cupboard, flanked by a pair of columns with gilt bronze bases and capitals. The base with a series of four graduated drawers with shield shaped lock-plate escutcheons inlaid with bone, to the center is a fall front writing surface enclosing a fitted interior with a series of drawers, pigeon holes and a central locking door, the doors and drawers are inlaid with satinwood stringing. All the locks are fully operational and keys are present.
