Boston style bombe secretary, late 19th-20th C., desk and bookcase on frame in mahogany, sloped pediment with dentil over bookcase, two beveled glass mirrored doors centering Corinthian capped columns, bombe shaped desk with four conforming drawers, frame with hairy ball and claw feet, old, possibly original finish.
Such secretary desks were symbols of wealth and learning in the 18th century, commonly found in the homes of merchants, professionals, and landed gentry. They served both practical and decorative purposes, housing documents and books. Style of Benjamin Frothingham.
