Empire Secretaire, Ebonized Wood, Maple, Ink Painting, Vienna circa 1815

About the Item

Very fine neoclassical Empire Secretaire or writing cabinet from Austria, Vienna around 1810/15. Ebonized hardwood body, veneered on oak. Pilaster columns with gilded capitals. All gilding original and patinated. Classicist gable cornice with surrounding gold-plated egg bar strip. On the front of the gable there is an ink painting of a depiction of an ancient ceremony in a landscape and a hidden drawer behind. Interior in maple and pear wood with secret compartments. Archways and small ebonized columns with gilded capitels. All original brass fittings and iron locks. Excellent workmanship and greatly restored condition, hand-polished with shellac.
