About the Item
Stunning Italian chinoiserie decorated secretaire bookcase crafted in the English George III taste. Beautifully decorated in the chinoiserie revival period of the late 19th century through the early 20th century in Europe. The tall two-piece case features an arched pediment on top with cornice sides. Below is a patinated brass mesh wire door opening to a three-shelf bookcase storage. The lower case features a trapezoidal slant front with a drop front writing table measuring 17 inches deep open. The desk area has three small drawers below three pigeonhole storage openings. Below the desk the case is fitted with 5 storage drawers, 2 small and 3 large. All doors slide properly and have patinated brass pulls. The case is embellished with idyllic Asian scenes with landscapes, pavilions, and figures. The lacquer has a desirable aged patina with fading and losses that add to its character.
