About the Item

An exceptional example of a late George I English secretary desk in walnut, its upper case with a molded broken arch pediment with urn finials surmounting two arched paneled doors, opening to two adjustable open shelves and six fitted drawers, over two candle slides, and a lower case with a fall front leather writing surface with compartmentalized interior, including a central prospect door with three fitted interior drawers, flanked by six valanced open cubbies and banks of graduated drawers, and a slide for a hidden central storage compartment behind the writing surface, and a two over two lower drawer configuration with feather banded veneers and period brasses, all supported by a carved bracket base. The piece is in very good condition, with minor restorations, minor writing surface stains, shrinkage cracks, imperfections and minor losses and wear commensurate with age and use.
