Exquisite "Chinese" Chippendale-Design Bureau Bookcase
About the Item
This bureau bookcase has almost too many fine details to mention:
- blind fretwork on all four panels surrounding bookcase windows
- an exceptional architectural pediment with classical dentils, open and blind fretwork, moulded cornices, and a central urn (beautifully carved from all angles) resting on a pedestal
- Chinese-style original brass fixtures on all 6 drawers and on the slanted bureau front, exhibiting brass work of the highest calibre
- beautiful flame mahogany on all drawers and most notably on the slanted bureau front
- flanking side columns on upper section that swing open on hinges to reveal a series of hidden shelves
- "ogee" bracket feet with serpentine form and handsome acanthus leaf carvings on all four corners of the piece, a rare and excellent testimony to the bureau bookcase's exceptional quality.
- the bookcase section is separated from the bureau by four drawers laced with blind fretwork and formed to fit perfectly with the various depths of the bookcase.
Interior of Bureau:
- 8 drawers in bureau laced with blind fretwork, and with bell-form brass handles
- 8 open cubbyholes for storage
- 4 "columns" which slide out to become filing drawers
- one central hinged compartment
- one secret compartment operated by a spring-release hidden on the roof of the central compartment!
A stunning and one-of-a-kind piece, showing craftsmanship of the very highest level.
Depth of piece is 25 1/4" when bureau is closed, 38 1/4" when open.
