French Secretaire à Abattant, First Empire Period

About the Item

French first Empire period Secretaire à Abattant, also known as a drop-front secretary, fall front or cantilevered desk. Under the dark grey marble top is a secret, entablature drawer. A cantilevered fall front opens to reveal several drawers, a column theatre and a writing surface. Secret compartments are hidden behind the columns and drawers. The base of the cabinet features two doors, which house three full-width drawers with individual locks. The piece is flanked by columns adorned with finely cast bases and etched bronze capitals. Depth from back of unit to opened desk is 35.5".
