About the Item

Rare and important secretaire inlaid in different woods, 156x124x60 cm. Signed on the front and right side. The attribution of the presented furniture is evident from the splendid pictorial rendering of the architectural inlays that made Maffezzoli famous. The two signatures, one on the front and the other on the right side confirm the first hunch. If this were not enough through further research, Luisa Bandera's text, Giovanni Maffezzoli, cremonese inlayer, Florence, 1964; excerpted from "antichità viva" no. 7-8, comes to the rescue. Giovanni Maffezzoli the most distinguished pupil of Giuseppe Maggiolini, already at a young age achieved notable success as the author of important furniture for noble Milanese families and high-ranking names such as Viceroy Eugene de Beauharnais himself. The taste of these years abandoned the convex, rococo forms of the past in favor of a French taste inspired by the models of cabinetmakers such as Oben, Riesener, and Roentgen. The forms are simple with straight, austere silhouettes but lightened by extraordinary inlays in rare woods and with delicate designs such as trophies, bouquets, ruins, and views. In this cultural and artistic context Maffezzoli fits in with all his skill as an inlayer. After his Milan sojourn, he returned to Cremona, and among his earliest works is the furnishing of a room in the Mina Bolzesi palace right in Cremona, which, from the date on the center table, is to be placed in 1795. And it is among the furniture in this supply that we find the touchstone with our secrétaire. A half-moon sideboard with rounded doors features inlays quite similar to the cove in the cabinet presented here. "The two doors are adorned with views that by their open and airy intensely chiaroscuro appearance, by their loose and darting manner (see the beauty of the foliage of the trees) seem to recall coeval Venetian compositions, such as the landscapes of Giuseppe Bernardino Bisson" (L. Bandera, ibid.). In fact, the two buildings to the right of the panel, the rock on which they are built, the passageway to the seated figures, the architecture and the village overlooking the body of water are perfectly identical on the door of the sideboard and on the cove of the secrétaire, indicative of the use of the same cardboard.
