About the Item
A very elegant and rare Louis XV period drop-leaf secretary desk, characteristic of Rococo furniture with its sinuous silhouette and refined proportions. The curved front rests on arched cabriole legs, finished with bronze sabots. The body is veneered with native woods with decorative marquetry featuring geometric motifs on the drop-leaf and doors; a marquetry border emphasizes the contours of the piece.
The drop-leaf forms a comfortable writing surface, upholstered in gilded leather, and reveals a finely appointed interior: compartments and small drawers. Ormolu-carved gilt bronze adorns the corners, the keyhole, and the sabots, with Rococo motifs—shells, foliage, and acanthus leaves—typical of the period.
The piece has its original locks, with one key in gilded bronze and the other in chiseled steel. The cabinet is topped with its beautiful original marble "bec de corbin" finish.
This cabinet, from a private French collection, is in excellent condition.
