A Magnificent George I Bureau Bookcase
About the Item
herringbone inlay open to a sumptuous veneered interior with an arrangement of pigeonholes, drawers, document slots, hinged compartments, and a niche door, also with herringbone inlay, opening to three more drawers. The candle slides contain
round, carved recesses for candle sticks. Bookmatched burl veneers with crossbanding and herringbone inlay decorate the slant front which opens to a finely detailed interior which repeats the decorative motifs of the upper section on a smaller
scale. The niche prospect door opens to three small drawers and is flanked by pigeonholes and an arrangement of ten drawers. A slide conceals a well and two thin drawers are
cleverly hidden inside the slide. The writing surface
is inset with tooled leather. The four drawers in the bottom section, two short and two long, all are burl veneered with herringbone inlay and are outlined with cockbeading. The piece is raised on later bun feet.
