About the Item

A monumental secretaire made by Maitland-Smith in the late 20th century. The whole piece was decorated with tessellated black marble and solid brass inlaid Greek key pattern. The lower cabinet features 4 drawers with solid brass drawer pulls. The drop-down desk platform is supported by two support drawers. Its interior shows many elegant-shaped drawers, pigeonholes, and a central compartment closed by a small door. All drawers are equipped with a solid brass-turned knob. Both sides feature a hidden compartment behind the panel that actually is a door that opens by a “push to open” mechanism. The upper part of the secretaire features many small drawers surrounding a central compartment with curved double doors. The top central cabochon detail stone is in emerald green. The secretary's front sides and top were fully covered with tessellated marble stones. The whole piece was polished to obtain a deep gloss on the stone surface as well as the brass inlaid section. The secretary was completely but gently cleaned in our workshop. It is without damage, clean, and ready for use.
