About the Item

Louis XVI cylinder bureau South Germany Walnut etc. Louis XVI, around 1780 Dimensions: H x W x D: 114 x 125 x 61 cm Writing furniture standing on typical classicist pointed legs. Walnut, maple and burl veneered on spruce. Finely carved wickerwork band all around below the drawers. Rosettes applied to the corners. Furniture front with knee recess beautifully carved also from the insides. Two recessed drawers in the knee hole. The fronts of the drawers are artistically designed and divided into geometric surfaces by fine marquetry. The superstructure is formed by a beautifully designed cylinder latch in the typical manner of the German Louis XVI. Floral inlays as well as a visually impressive cube marquetry are highlights of this piece of furniture. By pulling out the writing surface, the cylinder opens to reveal the simple four-bay interior. The fronts of the interior drawers are made of solid cherry wood. Two of the drawers were reconstructed in an older restoration. The original locks and brass sawn keyhole surrounds complete the look of this fantastic secretaire. A unique piece of German craftsmanship and artisan history. Condition: Refurbished condition ready for daily use. The cylinder and also all drawers run perfectly. The locks work. Original locks and hardware. Completed Keys. Two of the drawers were reconstructed in an older restoration, craftsmanship is well done, you can see it well in one of the photos. Surface polished with satin shellac.
