Pierre Chapo, architecte et ébéniste français formé à l’école des Beaux-Arts, s’est imposé dans les années 1950-1970 comme l’un des grands noms du mobilier moderne. Inspiré par les principes du Bauhaus et les créations de Charlotte Perriand ou Le Corbusier, il développe un langage propre, rigoureux, où la structure, la fonction et la matière sont au cœur de la création. Son matériau de prédilection : l’orme massif, qu’il travaille avec une grande maîtrise artisanale, en valorisant les assemblages traditionnels.
Cette étagère illustre parfaitement l’esthétique de Chapo. Son dessin épuré et solide met en valeur la beauté du bois, tandis que les montants latéraux puissants ancrent visuellement l’ensemble. Pierre Chapo
Pierre Chapo, who was born in Paris, France, in July 1927, was initially interested in becoming a professional painter. However, after a chance meeting with a shipbuilder who introduced him to wood and woodworking, Chapo changed his focus and decided to study architectural studies at the prestigious École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
After graduating, Chapo and his wife, the sculptor and painter Nicole Lormier, started traveling extensively through Scandinavia and Central America. Among the many places the couple visited was Taliesin West, the home and studio of Frank Lloyd Wright — a visit that had a lasting influence on Chapo’s future work and designs.
