midcentury 606 modular wall shelving by Dieter Rams for Vitsoe 1960s

About the Item

The 606 modular system was designed by Dieter Rams for Vitsoe in the early 1960s. Vitsœ was founded in 1959 by Niels Wiese Vitsø and Otto Zapf. Zapf introduced Rams to Vitsø, making it possible to bring Rams’ furniture concepts to life. Rams, who also worked as a designer for Braun, began working with Vitsœ and combined both designer jobs. The 606 Universal Shelving System was their first launch and became one of their most iconic collaborations. The 606 system won numerous design awards and is part of the permanent collection of the MOMA New York. This shelf unit dates from the 1960s and is made in a black lacquered wood and metal. The minimalist, timeless design is intuitively made. The shelves have four sliding doors and one cabinet that clicks open. Each compartment measures: Width: 90,5 cm, depth: 38 cm, height: 39,5 cm The smaller compartment measures : width : 90,5 cm, depth: 24 cm, height: 11 cm Total length as seen on the picture: 274 cm
