About the Item

Modular shelving rounded corner unit designed by Jorge Zalszupin in the 1950s, made from Brazilian Rosewood, also known as Jacaranda. The wood displays rich, natural patterns with dark and light streaks that create a visually striking grain. Each cabinet door is equipped with small, round handles, while horizontal metal accents serve as connectors between sections. The entire piece has been fully restored, highlighting the wood’s natural beauty and preserving its original character. The unit rests on short, robust legs, supporting its angular, L-shaped configuration. Jorge Zalszupin was a Polish-born designer who became a prominent figure in Brazilian mid-century modern furniture design. Moving to Brazil in the 1950s, he founded L’Atelier, a furniture company that combined Brazilian woods with modernist aesthetics. Zalszupin’s work is celebrated for its refined craftsmanship and innovative use of local materials like Jacaranda. He was part of a pioneering group of designers that included Oscar Niemeyer, Lina Bo Bardi, and Sergio Rodrigues, who collectively shaped Brazilian design with their unique blend of modernism and Brazilian cultural influences. Zalszupin’s designs remain highly sought after for their elegance and timeless appeal.
