About the Item

Patinated Elm Bookshelf in the Style of Pierre Chapo, France 1970s A striking and robust wall-mounted bookshelf crafted in solid patinated elmwood, made in France in the 1970s in the style of Pierre Chapo. While not an original Chapo production, the piece clearly draws inspiration from his design language: honest materials, expressive wood grain, structural clarity, and joinery-forward construction. The shelving system features an impressive architectural grid composed of four wide horizontal shelves intersecting with three vertical uprights. Each shelf is supported by handcrafted elm brackets, echoing the functional simplicity often associated with Chapo’s celebrated approach to woodworking. The result is a sculptural, balanced composition with a strong presence on the wall. Executed in solid elm, the bookshelf displays a beautiful warm natural patina, developed over decades of use. The grain patterns, subtle color variations, and soft edges contribute to its authentic mid-century character. The depth of 38 cm (14.96 in) provides generous practicality while preserving an elegant, floating visual profile thanks to the wall-mounted design. Measuring 183 × 38 × 183 cm (72.05 × 14.96 × 72.05 in), the piece is substantial yet refined, suitable for residential living spaces, creative studios, boutique interiors, or architectural environments seeking natural materials with character. Its strong geometric rhythm and clean proportions allow it to function both as a display system and as a decorative focal point. Shelving units of this quality in solid French elm are increasingly difficult to source, and this example offers a highly decorative and functional alternative for enthusiasts of Chapo’s aesthetic without claiming authorship or factory origin. Pierre Chapo, "B17 LONGUE" Bookshelf, circa 1967
By Pierre Chapo
Located in New York, NY
"B17 Longue" bookshelf by Pierre Chapo, circa 1967, in elmwood. Beautiful example of the timeless design mastery of Pierre Chapo (1927 - 1986). In 1967, Pierre Chapo presented new creations at the Salon des Arts Ménagers, exhibiting the B17 bookshelf for the first time. The B 17 is fixed to the wall, freeing up considerable floor space. The bookshelf, whose presence surprises by its discretion and elegance, comes in several versions of differing lengths and heights. The harmony of the lines between the uprights and the shelves (in 50 mm sections) is accentuated by the originality of the support system. Supports, as their name implies, normally prop up the shelves of a piece of furniture or else the jutting parts of buildings. Pierre Chapo decided not to take this universal law into account and modeled a support that fits into the upright, which means the shelf can be solidly fixed under its support. In a balance between gravity and the forces at play, the more weight goes on the shelf, the better its components slot into the upright. Literature: Magen H...
